Hello,

It sounds like you're navigating a difficult situation with your long-term medication. Escitalopram is typically an antidepressant, and Clonazepam is a medication often prescribed for anxiety or sleep issues. The symptoms you've described, such as 'drowsiness (feeling sleepy during the day), dizziness (feeling lightheaded or unsteady), and insomnia (difficulty falling or staying asleep at night) are important to address, especially after 8 years of use. When you stop the medication, experiencing sleep problems and feeling unhealthy are commonly known as withdrawal symptoms.

Understanding Your Medication Concerns

Long-term use of certain medications, especially those affecting the central nervous system, can sometimes lead to changes in how your body responds to them. This can manifest as side effects or withdrawal symptoms when attempting to reduce or stop the dosage.

Common Symptoms You're Experiencing

  • Daytime Drowsiness and Dizziness : These can be side effects of the medication, particularly if the dosage is now too high for your current needs, or if your body's metabolism has changed over time.

  • Insomnia : Paradoxically, while one of the medications might be intended to help with sleep, long-term use can sometimes lead to changes in sleep patterns or rebound insomnia when trying to discontinue.

  • Withdrawal Symptoms : Feeling unwell and experiencing sleep problems after stopping the medicine for a few days are classic signs of withdrawal. Your body has become accustomed to the presence of these compounds, and suddenly removing them can disrupt your system.

Important Considerations

  • Your body's needs and responses to medication can change over many years.
  • Suddenly stopping these types of medications can lead to significant and uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms, which is why you feel unwell after 7 days.

What You Should Do

It is crucial to approach changes to your medication regimen carefully and under medical supervision. Please do not adjust or stop your medicines without consulting a doctor.

Immediate Action Steps

  • Consult  Doctor : The most important step is to schedule an appointment with your prescribing doctor, a general physician, or a psychiatrist. Discuss all your symptoms openly, including the daytime drowsiness, dizziness, insomnia, and the unpleasant feelings you experience when you try to stop the medication.

  • Discuss Gradual Tapering : If a change is needed, your doctor will likely recommend a very gradual reduction plan, known as tapering. This method helps your body adjust slowly and can significantly minimize withdrawal symptoms.

  • Explore Alternatives: Your doctor might discuss alternative strategies for managing sleep and anxiety, which could include lifestyle adjustments, therapy, or exploring different medications if necessary.

  • Maintain Open Communication: Be honest with your doctor about how you feel during any medication adjustments.
