Hello,

The sensation of food coming back up, especially when lying down, is commonly known as acid reflux or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). It happens when stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, which is the tube connecting your mouth to your stomach.

Understanding and Managing Nighttime Acid Reflux

Common Symptoms of Acid Reflux

  • Burning sensation in the chest (often called heartburn), especially after eating or at night.

  • A sour or bitter taste in the mouth due to regurgitation of food or stomach acid.

  • Difficulty swallowing or a feeling of a lump in your throat.

  • Chronic cough, particularly at night, or hoarseness.

  • Disrupted sleep due to discomfort or the need to sit up.

Tips for Immediate Relief and Long-term Management

  • Elevate Your Head : Use extra pillows or a wedge pillow to raise your head and upper body while sleeping.

  • Avoid Late Meals : Try not to eat anything for at least 2-3 hours before bedtime.

  • Eat Smaller Meals : Opt for smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day instead of large ones.

  • Identify Trigger Foods : Limit or avoid foods and drinks that worsen your symptoms, such as spicy foods, fatty foods, citrus fruits, tomatoes, chocolate, mint, caffeine, and carbonated beverages.

  • Maintain a Healthy Weight : Excess weight can put pressure on your abdomen, pushing stomach acid upwards.

  • Wear Loose Clothing : Tight clothing around your waist can compress your stomach and contribute to reflux.

When to Consult a Doctor

  • If you experience persistent difficulty or pain when swallowing.

  • Unexplained weight loss.

  • If you notice black or bloody stools, or vomit blood.

  • If your symptoms are severe, frequent (more than twice a week), or do not improve with home remedies.

  • If you have chronic coughing, hoarseness, or a feeling of a lump in your throat that doesn't go away.

Treatment Options

  • Non-Surgical Treatments : These typically involve lifestyle modifications (as mentioned above) and sometimes over-the-counter or prescription medications that help reduce stomach acid.

  • Surgical Treatments : For severe cases that don't respond to other treatments, surgical procedures like fundoplication might be recommended to strengthen the barrier between the esophagus and the stomach. HexaHealth can connect you with experienced gastroenterologists and surgeons who specialize in such procedures, ensuring you receive advanced and minimally invasive treatment options for a quicker recovery.
