Hi,

White discharge after delivery, medically known as lochia, is a normal and healthy process where your body expels the uterine lining, blood, and bacteria from your uterus after childbirth.

Understanding White Discharge After Delivery (Lochia)

This discharge is a natural part of your body's healing process after childbirth, whether you had a vaginal delivery or a C-section. It changes in color and consistency over several weeks as your uterus shrinks back to its normal size.

Typical Symptoms and Stages:

  • Lochia Rubra (Red Discharge): This is the first stage, lasting about 3-4 days after delivery. It is bright or dark red, heavy, and may contain small clots.
  • Lochia Serosa (Pinkish/Brownish Discharge): This stage typically lasts from day 4 to around day 10-14. The discharge becomes lighter, more watery, and pinkish-brown in color.
  • Lochia Alba (Whitish/Yellowish Discharge): The final stage, which can last up to 6 weeks postpartum, involves a creamy white or yellowish discharge. It is much lighter and gradually tapers off.

Important Tips:

  • Use maternity pads instead of tampons to allow the vagina to heal and reduce the risk of infection.
  • Change your pads frequently to maintain hygiene and prevent bacterial growth.
  • Practice good perineal hygiene, especially after using the restroom.
  • Get plenty of rest and avoid strenuous activities to aid your body's recovery.

When to Consult a Doctor (Alarming Symptoms):

While lochia is normal, certain signs may indicate a complication. Please consult a doctor immediately if you experience any of the following:

  • Extremely heavy bleeding: Soaking more than one sanitary pad per hour for several consecutive hours.
  • Large blood clots: Passing clots larger than a golf ball.
  • Foul-smelling discharge: A strong, unpleasant odor from the discharge, which could indicate an infection.
  • Fever or chills: A high temperature (above 100.4°F or 38°C) or feeling shivery.
  • Severe abdominal pain: Intense pain or tenderness in your lower abdomen that doesn't improve.
