Is Treatment Cashless with an ECHS Card?

Yes, ECHS (Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme) provides cashless treatment for eligible Ex-Servicemen and their dependent beneficiaries. However, cashless treatment is available only at ECHS empanelled hospitals and for treatments covered under the ECHS scheme.

If you visit an ECHS empanelled hospital with a valid ECHS card and your treatment is approved as per ECHS guidelines, you generally do not have to pay the hospital charges yourself. The hospital bills the approved treatment cost directly to ECHS.

However, in certain situations, you may have to pay from your own pocket, such as :

• If you choose a non-ECHS empanelled hospital without following the prescribed referral or emergency process.

• If the treatment or procedure is not covered under ECHS guidelines.

• If you opt for non-covered services, upgraded room categories, or additional facilities that are not included under ECHS.

• If the required ECHS referral or prior approval is not available for treatments where it is mandatory.

For planned treatment, patients are usually required to obtain the necessary referral from the ECHS Polyclinic before admission, unless it is an emergency where different ECHS rules apply.
