Dear Ramen Chakraborty Ji,

Your symptoms suggest that your eyes be experiencing digital eye strain, dry eyes, or an uncorrected vision problem. When you read a book or watch a mobile phone, computer, or television screen for a long time, your natural blinking rate decreases significantly. This causes the surface of the eyes to become dry, and your eyes may respond by blinking more frequently, squinting, or appearing smaller while you are concentrating.

Another common reason is an uncorrected refractive error, such as the need for glasses or a change in your existing spectacle power. Eye muscle fatigue, age-related vision changes, eyelid muscle spasm (eye twitching), or other eye conditions can also cause excessive blinking or narrowing of the eyes during reading or screen use.

What You Can Do?

  • Follow the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look at an object about 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds to relax your eye muscles.

  • Blink consciously and more frequently while reading or using digital devices.

  • Keep your screen at a comfortable distance and increase the text size if needed.

  • Ensure the room is well-lit to reduce eye strain.

  • Limit continuous screen time and take regular breaks.

  • If your eyes feel dry, an Ophthalmologist may recommend lubricating (artificial tear) eye drops after examining your eyes. Avoid using any eye drops without medical advice.

  • Applying a warm compress over closed eyelids for 5–10 minutes may help relieve eye strain and improve tear quality.

Since your symptoms occur while reading or watching, it is advisable to undergo a comprehensive eye examination. The doctor will check your vision, spectacle power (if required), tear film, eyelids, and the overall health of your eyes to identify the exact cause.

Seek Immediate Medical Attention If You Notice

  • Sudden blurred or double vision.

  • Severe eye pain.

  • A drooping eyelid or inability to open the eye properly.

  • Twitching that spreads to other parts of the face.

  • Persistent redness with thick discharge.

  • Sudden loss of vision.

These symptoms require prompt evaluation by an eye specialist.
