How to tell if ankle swelling is related to heart problems?

Swelling in the ankles, also known as peripheral oedema, can be a symptom of heart-related conditions such as heart failure. Some signs that may indicate the swelling in the ankles is related to a heart condition:

1. The swelling tends to be symmetrical, affecting both ankles equally.
2. The swelling is worse at the end of the day, or when you've been standing or sitting for long periods of time.

4. The swelling persists, or worsens despite the use of diuretics or elevation of the legs.
