Sacred Heart Hospital was established to address the growing and complex healthcare needs of the Jalandhar suburbs. What began as a 50-bed hospital has since evolved into a multi-speciality facility under the guidance of the Sisters of the Sacred Heart Congregation. The hospital’s humble origins can be traced back to Dr Sr Laurence, an experienced doctor who completed her MBBS and MD studies in Germany, and who was deeply committed to serving the people of India.
Dr Sr Laurence, with the support of the late Dr Sr Alphonsa Chelapurathu, Sr Lissy Podimattam, the late Sr. Jane Maria, and Sr Maxima Thekkekutt, and under the leadership of Rt Rev Dr Symporian Keeprath, the then Bishop of Jalandhar, officially opened the hospital on May 16, 1985. Initially, the hospital offered departments in Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and Pediatrics.
The hospital is equipped with essential facilities such as endoscopy, a laboratory, an operation theatre, a labour room, ultrasound scanning, X-rays, and a fully operational 24-hour emergency department, complete with cardiac monitors, defibrillators, and an efficient medical team. Rev. Fr. P.K. Joseph oversaw the construction of the hospital and supported the sisters in overcoming early challenges.
Over the years, the hospital’s infrastructure, facilities, and medical technology have been continually upgraded. Today, it stands as a 170-bed multi-speciality hospital. Among its many milestones is the initiation of a General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) course aimed at training local nurses to provide quality patient care, guided by the hospital’s motto: "Love, Serve, and Save." The hospital maintains a policy that ensures no patient is turned away due to financial constraints, reflecting its commitment to providing care to all in need.
