Hello,

Cataract surgery can usually be done safely in people with diabetes. However, it is important to check your blood sugar levels and eye health before the operation. With proper medical care and follow-up, many people with diabetes have good results after cataract surgery.

What Should You Do Before Cataract Surgery?

  1. Consult an eye specialist and get both eyes examined to check the severity of the cataracts.
  2. Get your blood sugar levels checked. Your doctor may recommend an HbA1c test to understand how well your blood sugar has been controlled over the past few months.
  3. Get your retina checked for diabetes-related eye problems, such as diabetic retinopathy. The doctor may recommend additional tests if needed.
  4. Tell your doctor about all medicines you take, including insulin, diabetes tablets and blood thinners.
  5. Ask your doctor how to take your diabetes medicines on the day of surgery, especially if you need to fast. Do not stop or change any medicine on your own.
  6. Follow the instructions given by your doctor before surgery, including the use of prescribed eye drops.

What Is the Treatment for Cataracts in Both Eyes?

Cataracts cause the natural lens of the eye to become cloudy, leading to blurred vision. When cataracts affect daily activities, surgery is usually the main treatment. During the operation, the cloudy lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens. If both eyes have cataracts, the eye specialist will decide whether to operate on one eye first and the other later, or consider another suitable plan based on your eye condition and overall health. Diabetes does not automatically prevent surgery, but uncontrolled blood sugar or diabetes-related retina problems may affect the timing and recovery.

What Precautions Should You Take?

  • Keep your blood sugar under control according to your doctor's advice.
  • Eat balanced meals, stay hydrated and take your prescribed diabetes medicines regularly.
  • Do not use home remedies, herbal products or unprescribed eye drops to treat cataracts. They cannot remove a cataract.
  • After surgery, use the prescribed eye drops exactly as instructed.
  • Do not rub, press or touch your operated eye unnecessarily.
  • Avoid swimming, dusty environments and heavy physical activity until your doctor says they are safe.
  • Attend all follow-up appointments so the doctor can check healing and vision.

There is no proven home remedy, food or exercise that can remove a cataract. You can support your general eye health by eating a balanced diet, managing diabetes, avoiding smoking and attending regular eye check-ups. Do not delay surgery if your doctor recommends it because your vision is affecting daily activities.

Contact your eye doctor urgently if you notice sudden loss of vision, severe eye pain, increasing redness, worsening vision, flashes of light, many new floaters or a curtain-like shadow in your vision. These symptoms may indicate a serious eye problem.

Wishing you and your family good health always.
Warm regards,
