Dear Md Majed Ali ji,

Redness in the eyes, black dots or lines in your vision, and occasional itching can occur due to different eye problems, such as eye allergies, dryness, or floaters. However, new black dots or lines in your vision should not be ignored, as they can sometimes indicate a problem with the retina, the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye.

What Symptoms Should You Look For?

Symptom Possible Cause
Redness in the eyes Eye allergy, dryness, irritation, or infection.
Black dots, spots, or thread-like lines Eye floaters, which may occur with age-related changes inside the eye. A sudden increase can indicate a retinal problem.
Occasional itching Allergy, dry eyes, dust, or other irritants.
Watering or a burning sensation Dryness, allergy, or irritation.
Blurred or reduced vision Several eye conditions, some of which require urgent treatment.

What Treatment Be Needed?

The right treatment depends on the cause, so an eye examination is important.

  • For redness and itching: Lubricating eye drops or anti-allergy drops may help, depending on the cause. Ask an eye doctor or pharmacist which drops are suitable.
  • For dry eyes: Preservative-free artificial tears may provide relief.
  • For an eye infection: A doctor may prescribe specific treatment after examining the eye. Antibiotic drops are not needed for every case of redness.
  • For black dots or lines: An ophthalmologist may examine the retina, sometimes using dilating eye drops. Treatment depends on the findings; retinal tears may need urgent laser treatment or another procedure.

What Precautions Should You Follow at Home?

  • Avoid rubbing or scratching your eyes, even when they itch.
  • Apply a clean, cool compress over your closed eyelids to help relieve itching and redness.
  • Wash your hands before touching the area around your eyes.
  • Avoid dust, smoke, and other substances that trigger irritation.
  • Do not use steroid, antibiotic, or redness-relief eye drops without medical advice.
  • If you wear contact lenses, remove them until the redness and irritation have been assessed and resolved.
  • Do not share towels, eye drops, or eye makeup.

When Should You See an Eye Doctor Urgently?

Seek same-day emergency eye care if the black dots or lines have appeared suddenly, are increasing, or occur with flashes of light, a shadow or curtain across your vision, or reduced vision. These can be warning signs of a retinal tear or retinal detachment. Severe eye pain, marked light sensitivity, or a very red eye with blurred vision also requires urgent assessment.

Even if the black lines have been present for some time, arrange an eye examination if they have not previously been checked. Do not assume they are caused by an allergy.

Please do not delay an urgent eye examination while answering these questions if the black dots or lines are new or your vision has changed.

Wishing you and your family good health always.
Warm regards,
Team HexaHealth
