Dr. Mohamed Rela

Dr Mohamed Rela is a specialist in Gastroenterology and Hepatology with a rich experience of 42 years currently working in Rela Hospital, Chennai. He has performed over 1500 liver transplant surgeries to date.  His vision is to mark the healthcare concerns of the local population with international standards. He also focuses on providing cost-effective high-end treatments like multi-organ transplantation.

He started the Institute of Liver Disease and Transplantation at Global Gleneagles Health City in 2009. It has quickly become the largest liver transplant program in India. Since its origin, over 1500 liver transplantation surgeries have been performed under this program.

He is the Chairman and Managing Director at Dr Rela Institute and Medical Centre, Chennai. In December 1997, his team performed successful liver transplantation on a five-day-old girl, for which his name was registered in the Guinness Book of World Records in 2000.

He has also published over 400 scientific articles and papers on liver transplantation, complex hepatobiliary pancreatic surgery, and more.

Dr Mohamed did his MBBS from University of Madras, Madras in 1982. He then did an MS in General Surgery from the University of Madras, Madras in 1987. He also completed Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, United Kingdom in 1988. He even pursued a Diploma from Dr MGR Medical University, Chennai in 2013.

He is also a professor of Liver Transplant Surgery at Kings College Hospital, London. He has handled numerous complex medical cases and is known for attention to detail, accurate diagnosis, and treating patients with empathy.
