Is Thyroid TSH Test Covered Under ABHA Scheme for Seniors Over 75?

For a person aged 75 years, it is important to understand the difference between an ABHA card and an Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY card.

ABHA Card vs Ayushman Card

ABHA Card:

ABHA is a digital health account used to maintain, access and share health records such as prescriptions and laboratory reports. It does not itself provide free treatment or free blood tests.

Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY Card:

People aged 70 years and above are eligible for AB PM-JAY coverage irrespective of their income, subject to enrolment. The scheme provides up to ₹5 lakh health coverage for eligible beneficiaries.

Is a TSH Test Covered?

A routine TSH test done separately at a laboratory or during a normal OPD visit is generally not covered under PM-JAY.

However, if the 75-year-old patient is admitted to an empanelled hospital for a covered medical condition and the doctor requires a TSH test as part of the approved treatment package, the test is covered as part of that hospitalisation.

Therefore, having an ABHA card alone will not make the TSH test free. For Ayushman coverage, the patient's PM-JAY eligibility, hospital empanelment and applicable treatment package need to be checked.

If the person has symptoms such as unusual tiredness, weight changes, excessive sensitivity to cold or heat, swelling, or changes in heartbeat, a doctor should evaluate the symptoms and decide whether TSH and other thyroid tests are required.
