Hello,

We understand that sudden back pain can feel worrying, especially when it starts without warning. Please do not panic, as many cases of sudden back pain are caused by muscle strain or a minor back problem and improve with proper care.

However, because your pain started suddenly today, the exact cause cannot be identified without knowing your symptoms and medical history.

Common Causes

Sudden pain on the left side of the back can happen due to :

  • Muscle strain or muscle spasm
  • Wrong sitting or sleeping position
  • Sudden bending, twisting or lifting something heavy
  • Long periods of sitting
  • Nerve irritation or a slipped disc
  • Sciatica, especially if pain travels from the back into the leg
  • Kidney-related problems, particularly if pain is towards the side or back and occurs with urinary symptoms
  • Less commonly, an infection or another medical condition

If the pain travels down the leg with tingling, numbness or weakness, a nerve-related problem such as sciatica may be possible.

In people over roughly 60, especially with a history of smoking or high blood pressure, sudden back pain alone  even without abdominal pain  can occasionally be a sign of a problem with the main blood vessel in the abdomen (an aortic aneurysm). This is well-documented in medical literature as being mistaken for a spinal problem, sometimes with serious consequences from delayed diagnosis. If this age/risk profile applies to you, it's worth mentioning to the doctor directly, especially if the pain is severe or you also feel unusually unwell, feverish, or lightheaded.

What You Can Do Today

  • Take adequate rest, but avoid staying in bed for long periods.
  • Try gentle walking if you can move comfortably.
  • Apply a warm pack to the painful area for short periods.
  • You can also try an ice pack wrapped in a cloth if the area feels painful or swollen.
  • Avoid lifting heavy objects.
  • Avoid sudden bending, twisting or strenuous exercise.
  • Change your sitting position regularly.
  • Drink enough water.
  • Take any pain medicine only if it is suitable for you; ask a doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.

Important Precautions

Please do not ignore the pain if it is severe, getting worse quickly, or stopping you from doing normal activities.

You should get medical advice promptly if you have fever or chills, feel generally unwell, have unexplained weight loss, develop a swelling in the back, or the pain continues or keeps returning.

When Should You Go to the Emergency Department?

Seek urgent medical attention if the back pain is accompanied by :

  • New weakness or severe numbness in the legs
  • Numbness around the private parts or anus
  • Difficulty passing urine
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control
  • Severe pain after a major accident or injury
  • Severe pain with fever or chills
  • Chest pain or difficulty breathing
  • A pulsing sensation in the abdomen, or feeling faint/dizzy alongside the pain (especially if age 60+)

These symptoms can sometimes indicate a more serious condition and should not be ignored.

When Should You See a Doctor?

If your pain is severe, keeps increasing, does not improve with basic care, or is affecting your daily activities, it is better to consult an orthopaedic or spine specialist.

A doctor can examine your back and decide whether any tests, such as an X-ray or MRI, are actually required. Not every case of sudden back pain needs a scan.

Please don't worry unnecessarily. Most common back-pain episodes improve with appropriate care and gradual movement. If you tell us your age, exact location of the pain, whether it is going into your leg, and whether you have fever or urinary symptoms, we can guide you about the next appropriate step.

Wishing you and your family good health always.
Warm regards,
