Hello,
Chest pain along with weakness in a 65-year-old woman should not be ignored. It can have several causes, but a heart problem such as angina or a heart attack needs to be ruled out urgently. In women, heart-related symptoms are sometimes less obvious and may include unusual weakness, tiredness, breathlessness, nausea, sweating or pain in the back, shoulder, arm or jaw.
If your mother is having chest pain now, especially if the pain is severe, feels like pressure or squeezing, lasts for several minutes, comes and goes, or is associated with weakness, breathlessness, sweating, dizziness or nausea, take her to the nearest emergency department immediately or call emergency medical services. Do not wait for the pain to settle on its own.
Keep her seated and resting in a comfortable position. Avoid walking around or doing any physical activity. Do not drive her yourself if emergency medical transport is available.
If she becomes unconscious and is not breathing normally, emergency services should be called immediately and CPR should be started by someone trained to do so.
The doctor will first check her vital signs and heart. Depending on her symptoms, the evaluation may include :
ECG/EKG to check the heart's electrical activity
Blood tests, particularly cardiac troponin, to look for heart muscle injury
Echocardiography to assess heart function
Blood pressure, oxygen level and blood sugar testing
Chest imaging when required
Coronary CT angiography or coronary angiography when indicated
The exact tests depend on her symptoms and examination findings.
Treatment depends completely on the cause and test results. If a heart attack or acute coronary syndrome is diagnosed, treatment is aimed at restoring blood flow to the heart as quickly as possible. It may include:
Medicines to prevent or treat blood clots
Medicines to control blood pressure, cholesterol or the heart's workload
Angioplasty with stent placement when required
Coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) in some patients with significant or complex blockages
Not every patient with chest pain needs a stent or bypass. The cardiologist decides the treatment after examining the ECG, blood tests and other investigations.
Until a doctor has assessed her:
Avoid strenuous exercise and heavy household work.
Do not ignore recurring chest pain.
Do not stop any prescribed heart or blood-pressure medicines on your own.
Keep her medicines and previous medical reports ready for the doctor.
If she has diabetes, hypertension or high cholesterol, tell the emergency doctor about them.
Do not rely only on home remedies or assume that the pain is due to gas or acidity.
Seek emergency care immediately if chest pain is accompanied by:
Severe or persistent chest pressure/pain
Pain spreading to the arm, shoulder, jaw, neck or back
Breathlessness
Cold sweating
Nausea or vomiting
Severe weakness or dizziness
Fainting or loss of consciousness
Rapid or irregular heartbeat
These can be warning signs of a serious heart problem.
At 65, it is completely understandable for the family to feel worried when a mother complains of chest pain. The safest approach is not to guess whether it is gas, weakness or a heart problem. Please get her medically evaluated promptly, particularly if the chest pain is happening now. Early assessment can make an important difference when a heart problem is present.
Wishing you and your family good health always.
Warm regards,
Team HexaHealth
