Vein Blockage problem Frequent panic attacks and sleep disturbances
Medical Content and Care Team
Hello,
Having a vein blockage along with frequent panic attacks and disturbed sleep can be frightening and emotionally exhausting. Please do not feel that you have to manage everything alone. The first step is to make sure the vein problem is properly evaluated and, at the same time, get help for the repeated panic and sleep difficulties.
The exact treatment depends on what type of blockage it is, where it is located and what is causing it. If it is a blood clot such as DVT, the doctor may prescribe blood-thinning medicines and monitor the clot. Other types of vein problems can require different treatment. Do not start, stop or change blood-thinning medicines without medical advice.
A vascular surgeon or physician may recommend tests such as a Doppler ultrasound or other imaging to understand the blood flow and confirm the problem.
Panic attacks can cause a sudden racing heartbeat, sweating, trembling, dizziness, chest discomfort, breathlessness and a strong feeling of fear. They can be extremely frightening even when they are not caused by a dangerous condition. Frequent attacks can also create a cycle of worrying about the next attack, which can make sleep more difficult.
A doctor should first rule out physical conditions that can produce similar symptoms. After that, treatment for panic symptoms may include counselling or cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), relaxation techniques and, when appropriate, medicines prescribed by a doctor. CBT can also help with sleep problems.
During a panic attack :
Sit somewhere safe and comfortable.
Breathe slowly and gently rather than taking very rapid breaths.
Focus your attention on something around you and remind yourself that the episode will pass.
Talk to someone you trust instead of staying alone with the fear.
For better sleep :
Keep a regular sleeping and waking time.
Reduce tea, coffee and other caffeine-containing drinks, particularly later in the day.
Give yourself quiet time before bed.
Keep the phone and other screens away when preparing for sleep.
Follow the treatment prescribed for the underlying medical condition.
Do not take sleeping pills or anti-anxiety medicines on your own, especially if blood-thinning or other heart medicines are already being taken.
Please seek emergency medical care immediately if there is :
Sudden difficulty breathing
Chest pain or tightness
Coughing up blood
Fainting or severe dizziness
Sudden or increasing swelling and pain in one leg
A leg becoming unusually red, warm or painful
It is understandable to feel anxious when you are dealing with both a circulation problem and repeated panic attacks. With proper evaluation and treatment, both the physical problem and the anxiety symptoms can be managed. Please arrange a medical review rather than trying to handle the panic attacks and sleep disturbance only with home remedies.
Wishing you and your family good health always.
Warm regards,
Team HexaHealth
