MTP Kit: Price, Uses, Dosage, Benefits and Side Effects

The Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act was passed in India in 1971 to prevent illegal and unsafe abortions. This act aimed to lower illness and death due to unsafe abortions. For safe abortion, there are methods like medical and surgical abortion.

For medical abortion, MTP kits are helpful and should be used only after a doctor’s recommendation. MTP kits are a ray of hope for women dealing with unwanted pregnancies who cannot access advanced healthcare easily. It is a safe and effective process to terminate a pregnancy.

What is an MTP Kit?

MTP kit is a combination of two medicines, namely, Mifepristone and Misoprostol. Using these hormonal medicines is called inducing a medical abortion. This kit is used in the first trimester (till nine weeks) of pregnancy to end an unwanted pregnancy. The Central Drugs Standard Control Organization approves this combination of medicines. A registered medical practitioner (gynaecologist) can only prescribe an MTP kit (according to the MTP Act). A woman should never self-medicate and consult their gynaecologist for abortion. They can only prescribe the kit when the pregnancy is within nine weeks.

When is MTP prescribed?

The gynaecologist prescribes the MTP kit when the pregnancy is within nine weeks. Undergoing an abortion is a personal choice. A woman can have an abortion till nine weeks of pregnancy. The doctor will use an ultrasound to check how far the pregnancy's length is and decide the best option for them.

What is the use of an MTP kit?

The MTP kit is used as a method of medical abortion to terminate a pregnancy. The medicines are taken via oral (mifepristone) and vaginal (misoprostol) routes. This combination, when taken together, induces abortion.

What happens during a medical abortion?

The doctor prescribes two medicines: Mifepristone and Misoprostol, for abortion. During the medical abortion, a woman may expect the following:

  1. Mifepristone and misoprostol, taken orally: The doctor will tell the patient to take mifepristone in the doctor’s clinic or at home. After 24-48 hours, the patient may take misoprostol at home.
  2. Mifepristone taken orally and misoprostol taken through the sublingual, vaginal, or buccal route: Mifepristone is taken orally, and after 24-48 hours, misoprostol is to be taken under the tongue or through the vagina or dissolved in the cheek.

Who must avoid the MTP kit?

Women having the following conditions should avoid the MTP kit:

  1. Are far along in the pregnancy
  2. Have an ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy outside the uterus)
  3. Have a chronic adrenal failure
  4. Have anaemia or blood-clotting disease
  5. Are allergic to medicines used for MTP
  6. Use long-term corticosteroid
  7. Have an intrauterine device
  8. Cannot return for a follow-up visit
  9. Do not have access to emergency care

If taken without consultation, it may cause the following harm:

  1. Infection
  2. Incomplete abortion
  3. Heavy bleeding that does not stop
  4. Allergic reaction to the medicines

How does an MTP kit work?

The MTP kit consists of Mifepristone and Misoprostol. Mifepristone blocks progesterone (pregnancy hormone), and the lining of the uterus/womb become thin without progesterone. Due to this, the developing embryo detaches from the womb. After Mifepristone, when Misoprostol is taken, it causes contraction of the womb, causes bleeding, and the embryo gets pushed out of the uterus.

How to use the MTP kit?

Your doctor will provide instructions on how to use the MTP kit. Do not self-medicate, and you must meet your doctor. They will examine you and accordingly will suggest treatment. They will give you every information, including the dosage, side effects, etc. However, after the first medicine (mifepristone) is taken, there is a gap of around 24-48 hours, and then the second medicine (misoprostol) is to be taken. Shortly after the second medicine, a woman can expect the following:

  1. Heavy bleeding and cramping
  2. Low fever
  3. Chills
  4. Nausea
  5. Dizziness
  6. Diarrhoea

Can I use the MTP kit whenever I want?

No, it is recommended that a pregnant woman consult her doctor before using the MTP kit. Without knowing the process and its side effects, a woman must not self-medicate. It may lead to severe complications such as:

  1. Medicines causing allergic reactions
  2. Infection
  3. Incomplete termination of pregnancy
  4. Non-stop heavy bleeding

Is the MTP kit effective?

The combination of these medicines is 98% effective and is most effective when a woman hasn’t reached seven weeks gestation. You must consult your doctor if any of the doses are missed.

What are the benefits of an MTP kit?

The benefits of an MTP kit are as follows:

  1. It can be used in the early weeks of pregnancy (less than nine weeks)
  2. No need for anaesthesia and surgery
  3. More privacy
  4. Feels natural for few women
  5. Offers more control over their body

Are there any side effects of an MTP kit?

Abortion pills are often safe and successful before the first eight weeks of pregnancy. However, when taking abortion pills, women with conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes should exercise extreme caution and counsel. However, there are significant side effects that include cramping and vaginal bleeding. Other side effects of the medicine include:

  1. Fever
  2. Vomiting
  3. Nausea
  4. Headache
  5. Diarrhoea

What happens if I forget to take my MTP kit?

A woman must complete her dose and ensure that she completes her doses at the right time; skipping a dose or not following the instructions given by the doctor may cause complications. Some of the complications are:

  1. Infection
  2. Incomplete abortion
  3. Heavy bleeding that does not stop
  4. Allergic reaction to the medicines
  5. Fever
  6. Digestive pain and diarrhoea

A woman has every right to choose abortion. You or your loved ones do not require anyone’s consent to start the abortion process. However, discussing the situation and concerns with your doctor is crucial. They are the right person who will help you through these difficult times.

When should I consume the pills given in the MTP kit?

When used with misoprostol for pregnancy termination (63 days or less): Adults: Take 200 mg in a single dose on Day 1 of treatment. Then, two days later, a single dose of 800 micrograms (mcg) of misoprostol (four 200 mcg tablets) is administered.

What do you feel after taking mifepristone?

After taking mifepristone, some people experience nausea or begin to bleed as well. Your doctor or nurse can also prescribe antibiotics to avoid infection.

How long after inserting misoprostol should I lie down?

After inserting the misoprostol tablets, lie down for around 30 minutes to allow the tablets to dissolve. If you see the tablets slipping out, you can either push them back in or call a doctor for advice.

Is it okay to swallow misoprostol with water?

Misoprostol tablets should not be taken with water. After placing the pills beneath your tongue, give them 30 minutes to dissolve. You may show some adverse effects from consuming the pills.

How can I tell whether I'm still pregnant?

The surest way to know is to have your doctor perform an ultrasound to see the baby's heartbeat.

Can you take only mifepristone to terminate the pregnancy?

According to research, mifepristone causes abortions roughly 80% of the time when taken alone. But when a second medication, misoprostol, is added two days later, its effectiveness rises to an estimated 95%.

What if the misoprostol I took caused me to bleed less?

Contact the clinic if you experience little to no bleeding 24 to 48 hours after having the medication inserted. However, this is not an emergency to find out if the medicines worked or not.

Is vaginal or mouth administration of misoprostol preferable?

Misoprostol was more successful when administered vaginally during medical abortions than orally.

Does the medication for abortion make you sleepy?

You might feel exhausted or crampy for a day or two, and bleeding and spotting will last for some time. The day after a medical abortion, most people resume their regular activities.

Can I use misoprostol in the morning or at night?

If your doctor doesn't advise otherwise, misoprostol is best given at bedtime, with or after meals. You must take this medication with food or milk to help prevent loose stools, diarrhoea, and abdominal cramps. Don't administer this medication to anyone else.
