What tests are included in a full body checkup?

It is understandable to be concerned if your child is very thin, especially if there is also poor appetite or difficulty eating. A proper pediatric check-up and growth assessment would be helpful to understand whether the child needs nutritional support or whether there is an underlying health problem.

What you can do at home

• Give small meals more frequently instead of forcing the child to eat a large meal.

• Include nutritious foods such as dal, rice/khichdi, vegetables, fruits, curd, paneer, eggs or other protein-rich foods that the child normally eats.

• Add healthy calorie-rich foods such as nuts/nut paste, seeds or a little ghee when appropriate and if there is no allergy.

• Give nutritious snacks between meals rather than packaged snacks, chips or sugary drinks.

• Encourage the child patiently and avoid forcing, scolding or comparing the child with others.

• Do not start appetite stimulants, iron, vitamins or weight-gain powders without a pediatrician's advice.

Full check-up

The pediatrician can check the child's height, weight, growth chart, nutrition, development and general health. Depending on the examination, the doctor may recommend tests such as blood tests or tests for nutritional deficiencies. Not every child needs the same tests.

If the child is also losing weight, extremely weak, very sleepy, repeatedly vomiting, having persistent diarrhoea, drinking very little or passing very little urine, please seek medical care promptly.
