When a patient has a lung problem, high blood sugar and decreasing oxygen levels, it is important to get medical attention quickly. Lung infection, pneumonia, asthma or COPD, fluid in the lungs, or other lung conditions can reduce oxygen. High blood sugar can also make infections harder to control.

What Should You Do?

Please take the patient to a hospital or emergency department as soon as possible, particularly if the oxygen level is repeatedly low.

The doctor may check :

• Oxygen saturation and breathing rate

• Blood sugar

• Chest X-ray or CT scan, if required

• Blood tests and infection markers

• Kidney and liver function

• Blood gas test in more serious cases

The patient has severe breathing difficulty, bluish lips/face, confusion, extreme drowsiness, chest pain, fainting, or oxygen remains very low despite prescribed oxygen.
