What Treatment Is Available for Seizures and Developmental Delay in a 10-Year-Old Child?

We understand how difficult and worrying it can be for a parent when a child has been having seizures for many years and is also facing speech and developmental delays. With the right evaluation and continued treatment, there are several areas where your child can be supported.

What treatment is needed?

Please take your child to a paediatric neurologist, preferably at a hospital with a child neurology and developmental care team.

The doctor may review:

• Type, frequency and duration of seizures

• Current seizure medicines and whether they are controlling the seizures

• EEG or video-EEG, when required

• MRI brain or other scans, depending on the child's history

• Hearing and vision

• Speech, learning and developmental abilities

• Physiotherapy and motor development

• Behaviour and communication skills

The exact treatment depends on the cause and type of seizures. Anti-seizure medicines are commonly used, and the doctor may need to change the medicine or combination when seizures continue. Do not stop or change the seizure medicine on your own. Appropriate treatment can control seizures in many children.

Speech and developmental treatment

Along with seizure control, regular rehabilitation is very important:

• Speech therapy for communication and language development

• Occupational therapy for daily activities and coordination

• Physiotherapy if there is weakness, stiffness or difficulty walking

• Developmental and educational support according to the child's abilities

These therapies usually need regular sessions and patience. Progress can be gradual, but continuing therapy can help the child develop useful communication and daily-life skills.

What can be done at home?

• Give seizure medicines at the exact prescribed time.

• Maintain regular sleep and avoid unnecessary sleep deprivation.

• Keep a seizure diary with the date, duration, movements and recovery after each seizure.

• During play, choose a safe environment and avoid activities where a seizure could cause a fall or drowning.

• Continue the speech and other exercises recommended by the therapist at home.

• Talk, read, sing and interact with your child regularly using simple words and gestures.

• Encourage small activities the child can successfully complete rather than forcing difficult tasks.

During a seizure

Keep the child in a safe place and gently turn them onto their side. Remove nearby objects that could cause injury. Do not put a spoon, food, water or anything else into the child's mouth, and do not try to hold the movements down.

Seek emergency medical help when a seizure lasts 5 minutes or longer, seizures occur repeatedly without the child recovering, the child has difficulty breathing, or the child does not wake up normally afterwards.

Is surgery possible?

Epilepsy surgery is not required for every child. However, when seizures continue despite appropriate medicines, a specialist epilepsy centre can evaluate whether the child may benefit from surgery or another treatment. This requires detailed testing such as video-EEG, brain imaging and other assessments before any decision is made.

For some children whose seizures remain difficult to control, a medically supervised ketogenic diet can also be considered. It should not be started at home without a paediatric neurologist and specialised dietitian because the diet needs careful nutritional and medical monitoring.

The most important step now is to have your child reviewed by a paediatric neurologist/epilepsy specialist and developmental team rather than relying only on home remedies. Please keep all previous EEG, MRI, blood reports, prescriptions and seizure records ready for the consultation.
