Hello,

Knee pain and ligament problems can occur due to injury, overuse, arthritis, cartilage damage, ligament tears, or weakness around the knee. The correct treatment depends on the cause and severity of the problem. A proper evaluation by an Orthopedic specialist is recommended, especially if the pain is persistent or the knee feels unstable.

Common Symptoms

You experience

  • Knee pain while walking or climbing stairs

  • Swelling around the knee

  • Stiffness or difficulty bending the knee

  • A feeling that the knee is giving way

  • Pain after an injury or twisting movement

  • Difficulty putting weight on the affected leg

  • Clicking or locking of the knee

Possible Causes

Common causes include

  • Osteoarthritis or age-related joint wear

  • ACL, PCL, MCL or LCL ligament injury

  • Meniscus or cartilage injury

  • Previous sports injury or accident

  • Repeated stress on the knee

  • Muscle weakness around the knee

  • Increased body weight putting additional pressure on the joint

An MRI be recommended when a ligament or meniscus injury is suspected because it provides a detailed view of these structures.

Treatment Options

Treatment depends on the diagnosis. Mild ligament injuries and some knee problems can improve with rest, activity modification, physiotherapy and appropriate medicines. Physiotherapy can help restore movement and strengthen the muscles supporting the knee.

For a significant ligament tear, persistent instability, severe cartilage damage or advanced arthritis, an Orthopedic surgeon may recommend a procedure or surgery. ACL treatment, for example, can be either non-surgical or surgical depending on the injury and the patient's activity and treatment goals.

Home Remedies and Precautions

For recent pain or injury

  • Rest the affected knee and avoid activities that increase pain.

  • Apply a cold pack for around 20 minutes at a time, several times a day. Do not place ice directly on the skin.

  • Elevate the leg while resting if there is swelling.

  • A suitable compression bandage may help with swelling, but it should not be excessively tight.

  • Avoid running, jumping, squats and heavy lifting until the injury is evaluated.

  • Do not perform vigorous exercises without guidance if you have a suspected ligament tear.

  • Maintain a healthy weight to reduce stress on the knee.

These measures can provide temporary relief, but they do not repair a major ligament tear or advanced joint damage.

When Should You See an Orthopedic Doctor?

Consult an Orthopedic specialist if pain continues, swelling keeps returning, the knee locks, you cannot bear weight, or the knee repeatedly gives way. Seek prompt medical attention after a significant injury, particularly if there was a popping sensation followed by swelling or instability.
