Hello,

L3, L4, L5 and S1 are levels of the lower part of your spine. Problems at these levels can involve the discs, nerves, or the spinal canal.

Depending on the exact problem, symptoms may include :

  • Lower back pain
  • Pain spreading to the hip or leg
  • Tingling or numbness in the legs
  • Leg weakness
  • Difficulty standing, walking, or bending
  • Pain that becomes worse with certain movements

Having a problem at these spinal levels does not automatically mean that surgery is required. Treatment depends on what your MRI or other report shows, how severe the problem is, and whether the nerves are being compressed. Treatment may include medicines, physiotherapy, exercises, injections, or surgery in selected cases.

Seek emergency care immediately if you have :

  • New numbness in the groin, inner thighs, buttocks, or genital area ("saddle" numbness)
  • Difficulty starting urination, a feeling of not fully emptying your bladder, or new loss of bladder/bowel control
  • Rapidly worsening weakness in one or both legs, or increasing difficulty walking

This specific combination of symptoms can indicate a serious condition called cauda equina syndrome, where the nerves at the very base of the spine (right around the L4-S1 region) are being compressed. This is a genuine surgical emergency the severity of your pain doesn't determine urgency here, these specific symptoms do. Treatment within 24-48 hours matters for preventing permanent nerve damage, so go directly to an emergency department rather than waiting for a routine appointment if any of these occur.

Yes, you can share your MRI, X-ray, CT scan, or doctor's report here. I can help explain the medical terms in simple, easy-to-understand English and explain what the findings generally mean.

Please upload the report, and We can go through the relevant findings with you. Avoid sharing personal details such as your phone number, address, or other unnecessary identifying information.

We can help you find a suitable spine specialist or neurosurgeon and a partner hospital based on your condition and location. We can also assist with consultations, appointments, and treatment coordination.

If you share your city and state along with the report, we can guide you on the appropriate specialist and treatment options.

Wishing you and your family good health always.
Warm regards,
