Hello,

We understand that you are worried about your grandmother's health. Weakness and low energy can occur in older people, but persistent or sudden weakness should not be ignored. It may be caused by dehydration, poor nutrition, anaemia, an infection or another medical condition that needs treatment.

When Should You Seek Immediate Medical Help?

Please take your grandmother to the nearest hospital immediately if she experiences any of the following symptoms

  • Sudden weakness or numbness on one side of her body.
  • Difficulty speaking, a drooping face or sudden confusion.
  • Chest pain, difficulty breathing or fainting.
  • Sudden inability to stand or walk.
  • Severe weakness accompanied by unusual drowsiness or difficulty waking up.

These symptoms may indicate a serious medical problem and require urgent attention.

What Can Cause Weakness in Older People?

  1. Dehydration: Older people may not feel thirsty even when their body needs fluids. Dehydration can cause tiredness, dizziness and weakness.
  2. Poor nutrition: Eating less food or not getting enough protein, calories and essential vitamins can lead to muscle loss and low energy.
  3. Side effects of medicines: Some medicines, including certain blood pressure medicines and sleeping tablets, may cause dizziness or weakness.
  4. Underlying health conditions: Anaemia, diabetes, thyroid problems, infections and heart or kidney conditions can contribute to weakness. Older people with an infection may sometimes develop confusion or sudden weakness without typical symptoms.
  5. Loss of muscle strength: Spending long periods sitting or lying down can reduce muscle strength and make walking more difficult.

How Can You Take Care of Your Grandmother at Home?

  • Encourage fluids: Offer small amounts of water regularly, unless her doctor has restricted fluids because of a heart or kidney condition.
  • Provide nutritious meals: Offer small, frequent meals containing foods such as dal, curd, eggs and soft-cooked vegetables, according to her dietary needs and ability to chew and swallow.
  • Ensure adequate rest: Help her get enough sleep and avoid activities that make her excessively tired.
  • Encourage gentle movement: If she feels well enough and can move safely, help her with gentle movement or short walks with support. Do not force her to exercise if she is very weak or dizzy.
  • Prevent falls: Keep the floor clear of obstacles, provide good lighting and help her when standing or walking.
  • Arrange a medical check-up: A doctor may recommend blood tests to check for anaemia, blood sugar problems, vitamin deficiencies, kidney problems or infection, depending on her symptoms.

Do not start vitamin supplements, tonics or other medicines without medical advice, as the right treatment depends on the cause of her weakness.

Wishing you and your family good health always.
Warm regards,
Team HexaHealth
