What are the long-term effects of nerve damage from an arm cut?

Nerve injuries in the arm can affect sensation, movement, strength, or cause numbness and tingling. The recovery depends on which nerve was injured, how severe the damage was, and how the nerve was repaired.

After nerve repair, recovery can take time. A helpful thing to know: nerves regenerate very slowly typically only about 1 to 3 millimeters per day so it's normal for recovery to take many months, not weeks, especially for repairs further from the hand. This slow pace doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong; it's simply how nerve healing works.

Some patients may need regular follow-up, physiotherapy, hand therapy, or further evaluation depending on their recovery. A specialist may recommend tests such as a nerve-conduction study/EMG or other imaging to understand how the nerve is functioning.

Why regular follow-up genuinely matters here : if recovery seems slower than expected or isn't progressing, there's a meaningful reason to have this checked sooner rather than later  the muscles and nerve pathways involved respond best to any further intervention within the first several months after injury. This is exactly why staying on schedule with follow-up appointments (rather than waiting to see if things improve on their own) is worth prioritizing.

What You Should Do Now

• Continue follow-up with the treating doctor or a hand/microsurgery or plastic and reconstructive surgeon.
• Keep the operated area clean and follow the wound-care instructions given by your doctor.
• Do not lift heavy objects or put unnecessary pressure on the affected arm.
• Do not massage the injured area unless your doctor or physiotherapist advises it.
• Do not start exercises on your own; exercises should be appropriate for the repaired nerve, tendon, or other injured structures.
• Take prescribed medicines as advised and do not stop them without consulting your doctor.
• Keep all operation records, discharge summaries, scans and previous reports for the next consultation.

If the hand becomes very cold or pale/blue, swelling or pain suddenly increases, there is heavy bleeding, loss of sensation, or you suddenly cannot move your fingers, seek urgent medical attention.
