How important is hydration, and how much water should I drink?
Medical Content and Care Team
Dear Priya ji,
Hydration is important because your body needs enough water to regulate temperature, support digestion, carry nutrients, remove waste through urine, and maintain normal blood circulation. Drinking enough fluids also helps prevent dehydration, which can cause thirst, headache, dizziness, tiredness, and dark-coloured urine.
There is no single amount that suits everyone. As a general guide, many healthy adults need around 2–3 litres of fluids daily, with water being a good choice. Your needs may be higher in hot weather, during exercise, or when you have fever, vomiting, or diarrhoea. Food also provides some of the water your body needs.
People with kidney disease, heart failure, certain liver conditions, or a doctor's prescribed fluid restriction should follow their healthcare professional's advice. Drinking excessive amounts of water in a short period can also be dangerous because it may lower the sodium level in the blood.
Common signs include thirst, dry mouth, dark yellow urine, passing urine less often, tiredness, and dizziness. Seek urgent medical attention for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, or difficulty waking, as these may indicate serious dehydration or another medical problem.
Wishing you and your family good health always.
Warm regards,
Team HexaHealth
