What are the risks and recovery expectations for bilateral cataract surgery?

Cataract surgery can be done for both eyes. The ophthalmologist will first examine both eyes and decide whether surgery is needed and which eye should be treated first.

How cataract surgery is done

Cataract surgery usually takes around 15–30 minutes. The eye is numbed with local anaesthetic, so the patient generally does not feel pain during the procedure. The cloudy natural lens is removed and replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL).

After surgery, the patient usually goes home the same day after a short observation period. Eye drops are prescribed to help with healing and prevent infection or inflammation.

After surgery

• Use the prescribed eye drops exactly as advised.

• Avoid rubbing or pressing the operated eye.

• Keep water, dust and unclean hands away from the eye.

• Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activity until the doctor allows it.

• Attend the scheduled follow-up visits.

• Do not drive until the ophthalmologist confirms that vision is safe for driving.

The timing of surgery for the second eye will depend on the first eye's recovery and the doctor's assessment.
