What causes stomach and back pain together?

Stomach pain along with back pain can have several causes, including acidity or indigestion, constipation, kidney stones, gallstones, pancreatitis, urinary problems, muscle strain, or other abdominal conditions. The exact cause depends on the location, severity and duration of the pain.

Precautions and Home Remedies

If the pain is mild and there are no warning symptoms : 

• Eat light, smaller meals and avoid very spicy or oily foods.
• Drink enough water unless your doctor has restricted fluids.
• Avoid alcohol and smoking.
• Do not stay in bed for long periods; gentle movement can help if the back pain is muscular.
• A warm compress can help with muscular back discomfort.
• Avoid taking painkillers such as ibuprofen on your own, particularly if you have stomach or kidney problems.
• Do not start antibiotics or other medicines without medical advice.

When to See a Doctor

Because you have both stomach and back pain, consult a doctor if the pain keeps returning, does not improve, or is getting worse. Depending on your symptoms, the doctor may recommend blood and urine tests, an ultrasound, or other imaging.

Seek Urgent Medical Care

Go to an emergency department if you have :

• Severe or sudden abdominal pain
• Pain spreading strongly to the back
• Pain that feels tearing or ripping, or a pulsing sensation/lump in the abdomen
• Repeated vomiting
• Fever or chills
• Blood in vomit, stool or urine
• Black stools
• Yellow eyes or skin
• Difficulty breathing, fainting or severe weakness
• Inability to pass urine or stool
