Dear MD NABIULLAH ji

If you have pain in your right shoulder or upper arm and feel that the shoulder may be dislocated or injured, it is important to get it examined by an Orthopedic doctor. A shoulder dislocation can happen after a fall, accident, sports injury, sudden twisting or direct impact. Ligament, tendon, muscle or bone injuries can also cause similar symptoms.

A sling may support the arm, but a sling alone cannot confirm or treat a dislocation.

Common Symptoms

  • Severe shoulder or upper-arm pain

  • Swelling or bruising

  • Difficulty or inability to move the arm

  • Abnormal shape or a visible change around the shoulder

  • Weakness or a feeling that the shoulder is slipping out

  • Numbness or tingling in the arm, hand or fingers

A partial dislocation, called a subluxation, can sometimes look normal from the outside but still cause pain and instability.

What Treatment Be Required?

The treatment depends on whether there is a dislocation, fracture, ligament injury or soft-tissue damage.

If the shoulder is dislocated, a doctor usually performs a procedure called closed reduction to put the joint back into its normal position. An X-ray is generally used to confirm the dislocation and check for an associated fracture. After reduction, a sling may be used temporarily, followed by rehabilitation and physiotherapy.

If there is significant ligament, tendon or bone damage, or repeated dislocations, surgery may sometimes be required.

Precautions and Remedies

Until you are examined

  • Keep the right arm supported in the sling if one has already been provided.

  • Avoid lifting weights or moving the shoulder forcefully.

  • Apply an ice pack wrapped in a cloth for short periods to help reduce pain and swelling.

  • Do not massage or manipulate the injured shoulder.

  • Do not try to put the shoulder back into position yourself.

  • Do not start shoulder exercises until a doctor confirms that they are safe.

Pain medicines should be taken only as advised by a doctor, particularly if you have kidney, stomach, heart or blood-pressure problems.

When Is Immediate Treatment Needed?

If you believe the shoulder is dislocated, seek urgent medical attention rather than waiting for it to improve on its own. Go to an emergency department especially if the arm looks deformed, you cannot move it, or you have numbness, weakness, a cold hand or a change in the colour of the hand. Nerve or blood-vessel injury can occur with severe shoulder dislocation.
