Dear Sopan Maruti Kalhale ji,

Gas/acidity can sometimes cause bloating, burping, heartburn and burning or discomfort in the chest, especially after meals. Back and neck pain can commonly occur because of muscle strain, poor posture, prolonged sitting, an awkward sleeping position or a pinched nerve.

However, because you have mentioned chest pain along with back and neck pain, please do not assume that it is only gas. Heart-related pain can sometimes feel like indigestion and may spread to the back, neck, jaw or arms.

When Should You Seek Emergency Treatment?

Go to the nearest emergency department immediately if the chest pain

  • Feels like pressure, heaviness, squeezing or tightness

  • Does not settle or is getting worse

  • Spreads to the arm, shoulder, back, neck or jaw

  • Occurs with breathlessness

  • Is associated with sweating, dizziness or fainting

  • Causes nausea or vomiting

  • Is accompanied by severe weakness or unusual discomfort

These symptoms can occur during a heart attack and require urgent medical evaluation.

If you are currently having significant chest pain, please don't drive yourself. Seek emergency medical help.

Possible Causes

1. Gas, acidity or indigestion

Gas and acid reflux cause :

  • Abdominal bloating

  • Frequent burping

  • Burning in the chest

  • Sour or bitter taste

  • Feeling excessively full

  • Discomfort after eating

Chest discomfort that starts after meals along with bloating or acid reflux can be related to indigestion.

2. Muscle strain

Back or neck pain result from :

  • Long hours of sitting

  • Poor posture

  • Heavy lifting

  • Sudden movement

  • Incorrect sleeping position

  • Excessive exercise

Neck pain is commonly associated with poor posture, awkward sleeping positions, injuries or a pinched nerve.

3. Cervical or nerve-related problem

If neck pain is accompanied by pain, tingling, numbness or weakness travelling into the shoulder or arm, a nerve-related problem should be evaluated by a doctor.

4. Heart-related condition

Chest pain can sometimes be caused by angina or a heart attack. Heart-related pain may spread towards the neck, jaw, shoulders, arms or back and may occur with breathlessness, nausea, sweating or dizziness.

What Can You Do Now?

If there are no emergency symptoms

  • Eat smaller meals rather than very large meals.

  • Avoid foods that clearly trigger gas or acidity.

  • Reduce very spicy, oily and fatty foods if they worsen symptoms.

  • Avoid lying down immediately after eating.

  • Drink adequate water.

  • Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol.

  • Maintain good sitting posture.

  • Take regular breaks from prolonged sitting.

  • Use a comfortable, supportive pillow.

  • Gentle movement can help with ordinary muscle-related back or neck discomfort.

  • Heat or cold packs may provide temporary relief for neck or back muscle pain.

Do not repeatedly take painkillers or acidity medicines on your own without knowing the cause, particularly if the chest pain is recurrent.

Which Doctor Should Consult?

Because you have chest pain together with back and neck pain, it would be safer to start with a physician/medicine specialist or cardiologist, particularly if the chest discomfort is new or recurrent.

Depending on the examination, the doctor may recommend tests such as an ECG and blood tests. Further tests may be required depending on your symptoms and risk factors.

If the doctor rules out a cardiac cause and the symptoms appear related to acidity, you may then be evaluated by a gastroenterologist. For persistent neck/back pain, an orthopaedic or physiotherapy assessment may also be appropriate.

When to Get a Routine Check-up

Please arrange a medical consultation if

  • Chest pain keeps coming and going.

  • Gas/acidity symptoms are frequent.

  • Back or neck pain persists for several weeks.

  • Pain is interfering with daily activities.

  • You develop numbness, tingling or weakness.

  • You have diabetes, high BP, high cholesterol, obesity or a history of heart disease.

Back pain that is severe, rapidly worsening, associated with fever/unwellness, or accompanied by significant neurological symptoms also needs prompt medical assessment.
