Dear Anirudh Sharma ji,

We understand your concern. Since you have had a left shoulder sports injury for around 4 months, it is better not to ignore it or continue playing through the pain. A shoulder injury can involve a muscle, tendon, ligament, joint or rotator cuff, and the correct treatment depends on the exact problem. Because the pain has continued for several months after an injury, an orthopaedic doctor or sports-injury specialist should examine your shoulder.

What You Should Do Now

Please get a proper shoulder examination. The doctor may check your shoulder movement, strength and stability and may recommend an X-ray, ultrasound or MRI if needed, depending on the injury and examination findings.

Do not assume that you need surgery. Many shoulder problems improve with physiotherapy and a structured exercise programme, while some injuries such as certain tendon tears or shoulder instability may need specialist treatment.

Home Care for Your Shoulder

  • Avoid sports or movements that increase the pain, especially heavy lifting and repeated overhead movements.

  • Do not completely stop moving the shoulder, because prolonged inactivity can cause stiffness.

  • Use an ice pack wrapped in a towel for about 15–20 minutes if the shoulder becomes painful after activity.

  • You can use a warm pack for 15–20 minutes if warmth feels more comfortable for stiffness.

  • Maintain good posture while sitting and working.

  • Support your arm with a pillow when resting if this makes you more comfortable.

  • Get adequate sleep and avoid sleeping directly on the injured shoulder.

  • Do not massage the injured area forcefully.

These measures can help symptoms, but after a 4-month-old sports injury they should not replace a proper assessment.

Gentle Exercises You Can Try

Only do exercises that are comfortable. Because your injury has lasted 4 months, it is best to have a physiotherapist assess you before starting strengthening exercises.

1. Pendulum Exercise

Lean forward and support your good hand on a table. Let the injured arm hang freely. Gently move the arm forward and backward, then side to side and in small circles.

Start with about 10 gentle movements in each direction.

2. Cross-Body Shoulder Stretch

Gently bring your left arm across your chest and support it with the other hand. Hold the stretch for about 20–30 seconds without forcing it.

Repeat a few times if it remains comfortable.

These types of gentle movement and stretching exercises are commonly used during shoulder rehabilitation. Stop if an exercise causes sharp pain or makes your symptoms worse.

Precautions While Returning to Sports

Do not return directly to heavy gym exercises, throwing, swimming or contact sports just because the pain temporarily improves.

You should gradually return to sport after you have regained comfortable movement and strength. A physiotherapist can help you progress from gentle movement to strengthening and then sport-specific exercises.

Avoid heavy shoulder exercises, push-ups, overhead presses and movements that reproduce your injury pain until you have been assessed.

When Should You See a Doctor Quickly?

Seek prompt medical attention if you have :

  • Severe or worsening shoulder pain

  • Inability to raise or move the arm

  • Significant weakness after the injury

  • Repeated shoulder dislocation or a feeling that the shoulder is slipping out

  • Numbness or persistent tingling in the arm or hand

  • Major swelling or change in the shoulder's shape

  • Redness, warmth or fever

These symptoms can sometimes indicate a more significant injury that needs assessment.

Since your injury has already been present for 4 months, please arrange an orthopaedic or sports-medicine evaluation rather than continuing to manage it only at home. The right diagnosis will help determine whether physiotherapy, medicines, injections, further imaging or another treatment is appropriate.

Wishing you and your family good health always.
Warm regards,
