What Treatment and Surgery Options Are Available for a Left Femur Fracture?

We understand how painful and worrying a femur fracture can be. If the fracture is near your left hip joint and you are unable to stand or put weight on the leg, please see an orthopaedic surgeon urgently. A hip/femur fracture usually needs hospital treatment, and many fractures require an operation.

What Treatment Be Needed?

The operation depends on exactly where the femur is broken and what the X-ray shows. Your orthopaedic surgeon recommend : 

• Plates and screws to fix the broken bone

• A metal nail/rod to hold the femur in position

• Partial hip replacement if the fracture is close to the hip joint

• Total hip replacement in selected cases

The decision depends on your age, fracture type, bone condition and general health.

What Should You Do Now?

• Get an X-ray/scan reviewed by an orthopaedic surgeon.

• Do not put weight on the injured leg unless the doctor allows it.

• Do not try to walk without support.

• Keep the leg in a comfortable position and avoid unnecessary movement.

• Take only the pain medicines advised by your doctor.

• Do not massage the fractured area or try to straighten the leg yourself.

Do not start leg exercises or weight-bearing exercises on your own before the surgeon confirms that they are safe. After treatment, a physiotherapist usually teaches gentle exercises and gradually helps you stand and walk again.

Eat enough protein such as dal, milk/curd, eggs, fish or lean meat if you eat them, along with vegetables and fruits. Your doctor may also check vitamin D, calcium and bone health, especially if the fracture happened after a minor fall.

If you have severe pain, cannot stand or walk, numbness, a cold/pale foot, or the leg looks unusually shortened or twisted, please go to an emergency department immediately.
