Hello,

Joint pain and back pain can occur because of arthritis, muscle or ligament strain, poor posture, nerve compression, slipped disc, previous injury, overuse, or age-related changes. The right treatment depends on the exact cause, so persistent or severe pain should be evaluated by an orthopaedic doctor or physiotherapist rather than treated only with home remedies.

What You Can Do for Relief

For mild pain without any warning signs, the following measures help

  • Stay gently active instead of taking prolonged bed rest.

  • Avoid activities that clearly increase your pain.

  • Use a warm compress for muscle stiffness or spasms.

  • For a recent injury with swelling, an ice pack wrapped in a towel can be used for up to 20 minutes at a time.

  • Maintain a healthy weight to reduce stress on weight-bearing joints.

  • Take adequate rest and maintain a regular sleep schedule.

  • Use proper posture while sitting, standing and working.

  • Avoid lifting heavy objects, especially if you have acute back pain.

  • Wear comfortable, supportive footwear for joint problems.

For back pain, remaining active and gradually returning to normal activities is generally preferred over prolonged bed rest.

Physiotherapy and Therapy

Physiotherapy can be useful for back pain, arthritis, joint stiffness, muscle weakness and recovery after an injury or surgery. A physiotherapist can assess your movement, strength and flexibility and create an exercise programme according to your condition.

Treatment include:

  • Stretching and flexibility exercises

  • Muscle-strengthening exercises

  • Posture and movement correction

  • Joint-mobility exercises

  • Manual therapy when appropriate

  • Pain-management techniques

  • Gradual activity and walking programmes

  • Home exercises to continue between sessions

Do not start aggressive exercises, spinal manipulation or heavy gym workouts without knowing the cause of your pain. Exercises should be progressed gradually, and you should stop an exercise if it significantly worsens your symptoms.

Simple Exercises

If your pain is mild and there has been no recent serious injury, gentle movements such as walking and controlled stretching may be helpful.

For lower-back pain, exercises such as gentle knee rolls can be included in a physiotherapy programme. Start slowly and avoid movements that cause significant pain, numbness or weakness.

For joint pain, avoid completely stopping movement because prolonged inactivity can increase stiffness. A physiotherapist can recommend exercises that strengthen the muscles supporting the affected joint.

Medicines for Pain

Do not start painkillers regularly without medical advice, particularly if you have kidney disease, stomach ulcers, heart disease, high blood pressure, are taking blood thinners, or have other medical conditions.

Anti-inflammatory medicines such as ibuprofen are not suitable for everyone. A doctor or pharmacist should help determine which medicine and dose are safe for you.

When Should You See a Doctor?

Consult an orthopaedic doctor or physiotherapist if

  • Pain is persistent or repeatedly returning.

  • Pain is interfering with walking, work or sleep.

  • Joint swelling is increasing.

  • You have morning stiffness lasting more than 30 minutes.

  • Back pain is not improving after a few weeks.

  • Pain is travelling from your back into your leg.

  • You have numbness, tingling or weakness.

  • You have unexplained weight loss or pain that is worse at night.

What Treatment Be Needed?

The treatment depends on the diagnosis. Depending on the cause, a doctor recommend

  • Physiotherapy

  • Exercise and strengthening programme

  • Medicines for pain or inflammation

  • Weight management

  • X-ray or other imaging when indicated

  • Injections in selected cases

  • Specialist treatment for nerve compression, severe arthritis or other underlying conditions

  • Surgery only when appropriate and when conservative treatment is insufficient

Physiotherapy is often an important part of managing joint and back problems, but it should be tailored to the patient's diagnosis and physical condition.
