Knee replacement in both legs by Ayushmann Bharat yojana
Hello,
Yes, knee replacement treatment is covered under Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY, this includes bilateral (both knees) replacement when medically required, within the scheme's ₹5 lakh/family/year limit.
Surgeons can either do both knees in the same sitting or plan them as two separate surgeries. Same-sitting bilateral surgery carries a slightly higher (though still low) risk of complications and needing a blood transfusion compared to doing one knee at a time but it also means one hospital stay and generally easier overall rehabilitation. Because of this, doctors usually only recommend same-sitting surgery for patients who are otherwise in good general health, without significant heart, lung, or other systemic disease. This decision should be based on the patient's overall fitness for surgery, and the surgeon will assess this directly.
