What Treatment Is Needed for an Infected Leg After Amputation and Possible Further Surgery?

We understand how difficult and worrying this situation can be. If the right leg became severely infected and part of the leg had to be amputated, another operation may sometimes be needed if the infection has not completely cleared or if the wound is not healing properly.

The treating surgeon will first check whether the infection is under control and whether the remaining tissue has a good blood supply. If infection continues, the wound does not heal, or unhealthy tissue remains, further cleaning of the wound or revision of the amputation may sometimes be required.

This does not mean that another operation will definitely be required. The decision depends on the wound condition, infection, blood circulation and overall health.

The doctor may recommend:

• Antibiotics if there is an ongoing infection

• Regular wound dressing and monitoring

• Blood tests and other tests to check the infection

• Assessment of blood circulation in the remaining leg

• Cleaning/removal of infected or dead tissue if required

• Further surgery only if the surgeon feels it is necessary

Please do not delay the follow-up with the surgeon, especially because an infection after amputation needs careful monitoring.

What Precautions Should Be Taken

Keep the wound clean and follow the hospital's dressing instructions. Do not apply home remedies, creams or medicines on the wound without the treating doctor's advice.

Watch for increasing redness, swelling, warmth, worsening pain, pus or foul-smelling discharge, wound opening, or fever, as these can indicate infection.

If there is high fever, confusion, severe weakness, rapidly worsening pain or swelling, or the patient becomes very unwell, seek urgent medical care.

After the wound becomes stable, physiotherapy and rehabilitation can help with mobility and recovery, and the rehabilitation team can later assess whether a prosthetic limb may be suitable.
