Hello,

We understand that finding a hernia in your 7-year-old child during a routine check-up can be worrying, especially when the child has no pain or discomfort. The good news is that many childhood hernias can be treated successfully. However, the right treatment depends on the type of hernia, its size and the doctor's examination.

Please consult a paediatric surgeon (a doctor who treats surgical conditions in children). Even if your child has no pain, do not ignore the hernia. In children, a hernia often appears as a small bulge around the groin, near the belly button or in the abdomen. It may become more noticeable when the child coughs, cries or stands.

Does a hernia in a child need surgery?

The treatment depends on the type of hernia:

  • Inguinal hernia (near the groin): Surgery is generally recommended in children because the intestine or other tissue can become trapped inside the hernia, even if there is no pain initially.

  • Umbilical hernia (near the belly button): Some small umbilical hernias close naturally as a child grows. At age 7, the doctor will assess its size and whether treatment is needed. Surgery may be advised if it remains open, causes symptoms or has complications.

The doctor will examine the bulge and may recommend an ultrasound if needed. Do not assume that every hernia requires the same treatment.

What precautions should you take?

  • Arrange an appointment with a paediatric surgeon soon, even if your child feels completely fine.
  • Allow your child to continue normal, comfortable activities unless the doctor advises otherwise.
  • Avoid pressing the bulge forcefully or trying to push it back inside.
  • Do not use tight belts, coins, bandages or home remedies to treat the hernia.
  • Follow the doctor's advice about activity restrictions and treatment.

Seek emergency medical care if the bulge suddenly becomes painful, hard, red or swollen, does not go away as it normally does, or your child develops vomiting, abdominal swelling or severe discomfort. These may be signs that tissue is trapped in the hernia.

Please share where the hernia is located: near the belly button, in the groin or somewhere else on the abdomen. Also, please let us know whether the doctor has recommended surgery or only observation. This will help us explain the likely treatment options for your child.

Wishing you and your family good health always.
Warm regards,
