Dear Bharat gupta ji

We understand that hearing “blood clot in the veins” can be very worrying. In simple words, Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) means that a blood clot has formed inside one of the deep veins, most commonly in the leg. This clot can partly or completely block normal blood flow through the vein.

It is important to take DVT seriously, but it is treatable. The right treatment depends on the size and location of the clot and the patient's overall health.

What symptoms can happen?

A DVT cause :

  • Swelling, usually in one leg

  • Pain or cramping, especially in the calf or thigh

  • Warmth around the affected area

  • Red, bluish, or darker skin

  • Tenderness or swollen veins

Sometimes DVT have very few symptoms, so medical testing is important when it is suspected.

How is DVT diagnosed?

Doctors commonly use a Doppler/ultrasound scan to check the blood flow in the vein and look for a clot. Depending on the location and severity, additional blood tests or CT/MRI scans may also be required.

How is DVT treated?

The main treatment is usually an anticoagulant, commonly called a “blood thinner.” It helps prevent the clot from becoming larger and reduces the risk of another clot forming. The body then gradually breaks down the existing clot. Treatment often continues for at least 3 months, but the duration can vary depending on the cause and the patient's condition.

In some severe cases, especially when there is a large clot causing significant problems, a vascular specialist may consider a procedure to remove or break up the clot. This is not required for every DVT patient.

Please be careful about these symptoms

A DVT can sometimes become dangerous if a part of the clot breaks away and travels to the lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism (PE). If you suddenly develop chest pain, difficulty breathing, coughing up blood, fainting, or severe weakness, seek emergency medical care immediately. (nhs.uk)

Please do not start or stop blood-thinning medicines on your own. Your doctor should decide the appropriate medicine and dose based on your reports and overall health.

Wishing you and your family good health always.
