Hello,

If your mother has had a neck swelling for the last 2 months and a doctor has already recommended further evaluation, she should not delay the investigation. Neck swelling can have several causes, including an enlarged lymph node, thyroid swelling/nodule, infection, salivary gland problems or, less commonly, a tumour. A persistent neck swelling needs proper diagnosis rather than treatment based only on symptoms.

What Tests Be Required?

The doctor recommend tests depending on the exact location and nature of the swelling, such as

  • Ultrasound of the neck and thyroid

  • Thyroid blood tests such as TSH

  • CT or MRI of the neck when required

  • Fine-needle aspiration (FNAC) or another biopsy if a lump needs tissue examination

  • Blood tests if an infection or other underlying condition is suspected

For a suspected thyroid swelling, ultrasound is commonly used for evaluation. For a persistent neck mass in an adult, further imaging and, when indicated, needle biopsy may be recommended.

What Should You Do Now?

Since the swelling has continued for 2 months, please follow the doctor's recommendation and arrange an evaluation with an appropriate specialist, such as an ENT specialist, endocrinologist or general surgeon depending on the location and suspected cause.

Do not start antibiotics, steroids or other medicines on your own. Antibiotics are generally not recommended for a neck mass unless there are signs suggesting a bacterial infection.

Precautions

  • Do not repeatedly press or massage the swelling.

  • Keep all previous reports and prescriptions ready.

  • Note whether the swelling is increasing in size.

  • Inform the doctor if she has fever, weight loss, night sweats, difficulty swallowing or voice changes.

  • Avoid delaying recommended imaging or FNAC/biopsy.

If she develops difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing, rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain or sudden deterioration, seek urgent medical attention.
