Dear Udyaveer ji,

Yes, surgery is considered for a 15-year-old if the crooked nasal bone is causing problems such as repeated nosebleeds, difficulty breathing, nasal blockage, or a significant structural deformity. However, surgery is not automatically required. An ENT specialist should first examine your son and determine the cause of the nosebleeds and whether the nasal bone or septum is deviated.

Frequent nosebleeds in children can also occur due to dry nasal passages, nose picking, allergies, irritation, injury, or other nasal conditions. Therefore, the underlying cause should be evaluated before deciding on surgery.

What Treatment Be Required?

The ENT specialist recommend

  • Nasal examination and, if needed, nasal endoscopy

  • Treatment for nasal dryness or allergies

  • Medicines or local treatment to control recurrent bleeding

  • Septoplasty or other corrective surgery if there is significant nasal obstruction

  • Septorhinoplasty or other procedures when both functional and structural correction is required

The appropriate procedure depends on your son's nasal growth, symptoms, examination findings, and the severity of the deviation.

Precautions for Recurrent Nosebleeds

Until he is evaluated

  • Do not allow him to pick or scratch inside the nose.

  • Keep the nasal passages adequately moisturised as advised by the doctor.

  • Avoid forceful nose blowing.

  • Avoid strenuous activity immediately after a nosebleed.

  • During bleeding, make him sit upright, lean slightly forward, and gently pinch the soft part of the nose continuously for around 10–15 minutes.

  • Do not tilt his head backward, as blood may flow into the throat.

If bleeding is heavy, does not stop after 15–20 minutes of continuous pressure, follows a significant injury, or your son becomes dizzy, weak, or has difficulty breathing, seek urgent medical care.
