What are the treatment options for stomach cancer?

We understand that having cancer along with a lot of stomach pain and headache can feel very frightening, and it is natural to feel scared and think that something very serious is happening. Please do not lose hope. These symptoms do not by themselves mean that you are going to die. Cancer and its treatment can cause pain and other symptoms, and many of these symptoms can be treated or controlled with proper medical care.

Because you already have cancer and are now having significant stomach pain and headache, please inform your oncologist or treating doctor as soon as possible. The doctor needs to find out what is causing the pain rather than assuming it is only because of cancer.

Depending on your cancer type, stage and current treatment, the doctor may examine you and recommend blood tests, scans or other tests. The treatment will depend on the actual cause of your symptoms.

Cancer treatment is different for every person. Depending on your cancer, the doctor may recommend treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted treatment, immunotherapy or another appropriate treatment.

Your pain should also be treated. Cancer pain can often be controlled with medicines and other supportive treatments. Your doctor may prescribe pain-relieving medicines according to the severity and cause of the pain. Do not increase the dose or start strong pain medicines on your own.

If pain, nausea, weakness, anxiety or other symptoms are difficult to manage, ask your doctor about supportive or palliative care. Palliative care does not mean that treatment has stopped or that death is near. It can be given along with cancer treatment to control symptoms and improve quality of life.

Precautions at Home

• Take your cancer medicines exactly as prescribed.

• Do not take painkillers, antibiotics or herbal medicines without asking your doctor.

• Eat small, light meals if your stomach is uncomfortable.

• Drink enough fluids unless your doctor has advised you to restrict fluids.

• Avoid alcohol and smoking.

• Take adequate rest and avoid unnecessary physical strain.

• Keep your doctor informed if the pain becomes worse or your headache changes.

• Keep all your cancer reports, scans, biopsy reports and current medicines with you when visiting the doctor.

When Should You Go to the Emergency Department?

Please seek urgent medical care if you have severe or rapidly worsening stomach pain, repeated vomiting, blood in vomit or stool, severe or sudden headache, confusion, fainting, seizures, difficulty breathing, new weakness or numbness, difficulty speaking, or a major change in vision. New or severe pain in someone with cancer should be reported promptly.

Most importantly, please do not assume that you are going to die because you are having these symptoms. You need a proper examination to understand what is happening, and there are treatments available to control cancer symptoms and pain. Please involve a family member or someone you trust and arrange an appointment with your oncologist as soon as possible.
