Torn Hymen

A Hymen is a  membranous structure that surrounds the vagina. Hymen comes in different shapes; the most common form is moon-shaped. The profile allows easy flow of blood from the vagina during menstruation.

It is a paradox that the appearance of a Hymen indicates virginity. It is simple to determine whether your Hymen has torn or not. You don't need to see a doctor or a gynaecologist figure this out. If you can easily insert your finger or feel abnormal tissue around the vaginal walls without resistance or discomfort, your Hymen is most likely torn.

Changes in Hymen during the lifetime

  1. Hymen is small and sensitive before puberty.
  2. Increased hormones like oestrogen cause the Hymen and other vaginal tissues to thicken and stretch during adolescence.
  3. Increased hormones force your vaginal tissues to stretch even more throughout pregnancy to enable childbirth.
  4. The shape of Hymen and vaginal tissues may also change due to childbirth.
  5. Hymen and other vaginal tissues become thin with menopause and ageing (as oestrogen decreases).
