Dear zamrooda ji,

If your sister has significant hearing loss in one ear and doctors have advised an operation, she should consult an ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) specialist before deciding on the procedure. The treatment depends on the exact cause and type of hearing loss. Some causes can be treated medically, while others may require surgery or a hearing device.

A critical time-sensitive point, if this started suddenly: if your sister's hearing loss came on suddenly (over hours to a few days), this is considered a genuine ear emergency, not something to wait on. Treatment (usually steroids, sometimes given as an injection directly into the ear) works best within a narrow window generally 2 to 4 weeks from when the hearing loss started after which the chances of recovery drop meaningfully. If this hasn't already happened, ask urgently whether steroid treatment is still an option based on how long it's been.

What You Should Do

  1. Get a detailed ENT examination.
  2. Have an audiometry/hearing test done to determine the degree and type of hearing loss.
  3. Ask the doctor what is causing the hearing loss and what operation is being recommended.
  4. Ask specifically whether an MRI has been done or is planned — for sudden one-sided hearing loss, MRI is a standard part of the workup, since a rare but real cause is a benign tumor on the hearing nerve (acoustic neuroma), which can appear as sudden hearing loss before any other symptom shows up.
  5. Ask whether a hearing aid or another non-surgical option is possible.
  6. If surgery is necessary, ask about the expected hearing improvement, risks, recovery time and alternatives.

For some conditions such as otosclerosis, surgery can improve hearing, while for permanent one-sided sensorineural hearing loss, options such as CROS/BiCROS hearing aids or bone-anchored hearing devices may be considered.

When to Seek Urgent Care

If the hearing loss started suddenly, is rapidly worsening, or is associated with severe dizziness, facial weakness, severe headache, ear discharge or other neurological symptoms, seek urgent medical evaluation without delay — for sudden hearing loss specifically, time genuinely affects the treatment outcome.

Wishing you and your family good health always.
