Description
Is it dangerous to have fluid on the knee?
Dear Mohan Kumar ji
Fluid in the knee is also called a knee effusion. It means extra fluid has collected inside the knee joint. It is not always dangerous, but the cause of the swelling should be checked by a doctor.
Knee fluid can develop because of
A knee injury or fall
Ligament or meniscus injury
Arthritis
Gout
Too much exercise or pressure on the knee
Inflammation inside the joint
Infection in the knee
Sometimes, the swelling can happen without any clear injury.
You may notice
Swelling around the knee
Knee pain or tenderness
Stiffness while moving the knee
Difficulty bending or straightening the knee
Difficulty walking
A feeling of heaviness or tightness in the knee
Warmth around the swollen area
You should see a doctor quickly if the knee is very painful, red, or hot. Fever along with a swollen knee can indicate an infection and needs urgent treatment.
Also seek medical attention if you cannot put weight on the leg or the swelling started suddenly after a serious injury.
An orthopaedic doctor will examine your knee and may recommend an X-ray, MRI, blood tests, or ultrasound depending on your symptoms.
Sometimes, the doctor may remove a small amount of fluid from the knee with a needle. This fluid can be tested to find out whether there is an infection, blood, or gout-related crystals.
Treatment depends on the reason for the swelling.
Mild swelling may improve with rest, ice, and medicines advised by your doctor.
Arthritis may require medicines, exercises, physiotherapy, and weight management.
Gout requires treatment to control inflammation and uric acid.
An infection needs urgent medical treatment and sometimes drainage of the infected fluid.
A serious ligament or meniscus injury may require surgery.
Having fluid in the knee does not automatically mean that surgery is needed.
Give the knee adequate rest.
Avoid activities that increase pain or swelling.
Do not take painkillers or steroids without medical advice.
Do not ignore swelling that keeps coming back.
Follow the exercises or physiotherapy recommended by your doctor.
Maintain a healthy weight to reduce pressure on the knee.
