How to Treat Sore and Burning Skin After Diarrhoea in Adults?

How to Soothe the Irritated Skin

• Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly or zinc oxide barrier cream to protect the skin.

• Keep the area clean and dry.

• Wear loose, breathable cotton underwear.

• A warm sitz bath for 10–15 minutes can provide additional comfort.

• Avoid scented soaps, perfumes, and alcohol-based wipes around the area.

Manage the Diarrhoea

Treating the underlying diarrhoea is important because continued loose stools can keep irritating the skin.

• Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration.

• Oral rehydration solution (ORS) can help replace lost fluids and electrolytes.

• Eat light, easily digestible foods until symptoms improve.

• Avoid very spicy, oily, or irritating foods temporarily.

• Do not take antibiotics or anti-diarrhoeal medicines without medical advice, especially if you have fever or blood in the stool.

When Should You See a Doctor?

Consult a doctor if diarrhoea continues for more than a few days or keeps returning. Medical attention is particularly important if you have blood or black stools, high fever, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, significant weakness, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine or dizziness.

Severe pain, swelling, pus, or persistent bleeding around the anus also requires medical evaluation because the problem may be more than simple skin irritation.
