What is CGHS?


CGHS stands for Central Government Health Scheme. It is a health insurance scheme launched by the Government of India for its employees, pensioners and dependents. Given are the following highlights of the scheme:


  1. The scheme aims to provide affordable and quality healthcare to the beneficiaries.
  2. Under CGHS, beneficiaries are entitled to medical facilities such as outdoor consultations, hospitalisation, diagnostic tests, and surgeries at CGHS-approved hospitals and dispensaries.
  3. The scheme also covers pre-existing and chronic conditions as well as maternity and child care.
  4. The CGHS operates through a network of wellness centres in various cities.
  5. These centres provide preventive and curative healthcare services, including general medicine, paediatrics, gynaecology, and dental care.
  6. The Government of India funds the CGHS, and the beneficiaries must pay a nominal contribution towards the cost of their treatment.
  7. The contribution is based on the employee`'`s salary and the number of dependents covered under the scheme.
  8. The CGHS has been criticised for its inadequate coverage, long waiting periods, and lack of infrastructure at some hospitals.
  9. However, the government has been working towards improving the quality and accessibility of healthcare under the scheme.

2. In the Beneficiary section, click the CGHS tab. On the Empaneled Hospitals page, choose your city from the drop-down box.


3. Press the "Submit" key.


4. Select the "Print" button in green colour.

Diseases covered under CGHS


The Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) is a government-run healthcare program in India that provides medical coverage to specific categories of government employees and their families. The CGHS covers various diseases and medical conditions, including cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and infectious diseases.


  1. Surgery (including both general and specialised surgery)
  2. Cardiology
    • Acute coronary syndrome (Coronary artery bypass graft/ Percutaneous, Transluminal coronary angioplasty), including Myocardial infarction, Unstable angina, Ventricular arrhythmias, Paroxysmal Supraventricular Tachycardia, Cardiac Tamponade, Acute left ventricular failure/ Severe Congestive cardiac failure, Accelerated hypertension, Complete heart block and stoke adam attack, Acute aortic dissection.
  3. Neurosurgery
    • Acute Limb Ischemia, Rupture of Aneurysm, Medical and Surgical shock and peripheral circulatory failure
    • Cerebro-Vascular attack-Stokes, Sudden unconsciousness, Head injury, Respiratory failure, decompensated lung disease, Cerebro-Meningeal infections, Convulsions, Acute Paralysis, Acute Visual loss, Acute Abdomen pain, Electric shock
  4. Accident and Trauma
    • Road Traffic Accidents/injuries, including falls.
  5. Severe Haemorrhage due to any cause, Acute poisoning, Acute Renal Failure.
  6. Acute abdomen pain in females, including acute Obstetrical and Gynaecological emergencies
  7. Infectious and communicable diseases
  8. Non-communicable diseases such as cancer, hypertension, and diabetes
  9. Mental conditions such as anxiety and depression
  10. Gynaecological and obstetrical conditions

  12. Geriatric care

  14. Dentistry
  15. Orthopaedics
  16. ENT (ear, nose, and throat) conditions

Please note that the CGHS may not cover certain treatments or procedures if they are deemed to be experimental or not in the best interest of the patient.


Facilities availed under CGHS


Currently, CGHS covers over 41 lakh beneficiaries throughout 75 cities in India, and efforts are being made to expand that number to increase service accessibility.


  1. CGHS offers healthcare through the following medical systems:

  2. Outpatient care at CGHS wellness centres, including consultation with doctors and specialists, diagnostics, and referrals to hospitals as needed
  3. Inpatient care at empanelled hospitals, including hospitalisation, surgery, and other treatments as required
  4. Maternity and child healthcare, including pre-and post-natal care, delivery, and neonatal care. IVF treatment is also approved under CGHS.
  5. Free supply of essential drugs, including generic drugs, from CGHS dispensaries
  6. Anti-Cancer and other similar medicines are supplied on a case-to-case basis. CGHS shall provide medication as per the available brand name / generic name.
  7. Ambulance charges are reimbursable within the city if there is a certificate from the treating doctor that conveyance by any other mode would endanger a patient"s life or grossly aggravate their condition.
  8. Emergency care at any hospital, including transportation to the nearest hospital in case of a medical emergency
  9. Specialised healthcare services, including treatment for chronic conditions, cancer, and other diseases.
