A Deeply Disappointing Experience in Critical Care My father was admitted to CK Birla Hospital on 8th May under the care of Dr. Abhinav Sharma due to fluid accumulation in the stomach. During the five-day hospitalization, various tests were conducted, including endoscopy, biopsy, and fluid analysis. At discharge, Dr. Abhinav Sharma informed us that the fluid would resolve on its own and offered no active follow-up plan despite my father’s frail condition. Unfortunately, my father’s condition worsened significantly post-discharge—he became extremely weak, unable to walk or even sit up unassisted. When we visited Dr. Abhinav Sharma again a week later, he dismissed our concerns without re-evaluating his diagnosis and instead referred us to a neurologist, despite clear signs of systemic deterioration. It was only after consulting another doctor (Dr. Anjani Kumar Sharma) that my father was immediately admitted to the ICU, where tests revealed serious multi-organ involvement, including the kidneys, liver, and circulatory system—none of which were addressed or followed up on by Dr. Abhinav Sharma during or after the initial hospitalization. Despite these findings, Dr. Abhinav Sharma refused to re-engage with the case, citing that it had now moved to another department, and did not visit or consult on my father’s condition again—even as the infection spread further, ultimately leading to his being placed on a ventilator. Tragically, my father passed away a week later, with no clarity on the root cause of the infection and no effort made to involve a gastroenterology expert again, even though the condition originated in the abdomen. This experience with Dr. Abhinav Sharma was deeply disappointing. I believe his lack of follow-through, premature discharge decision, and unwillingness to stay involved in a rapidly deteriorating case played a significant role in the poor outcome. I hope this feedback encourages more accountability and better continuity of care, especially in complex and life-threatening cases.
