What is Laser Piles Surgery?

Haemorrhoids or piles are swollen and enlarged blood vessels in the anal cushion region that can cause discomforts like itching and rectal bleeding. When medications are ineffective in treating piles, doctors recommend surgery. Your surgeon may perform piles surgery with a knife (scalpel), electrocautery (by a tool that uses electricity), stapling device, or laser device.

Laser Surgery for Piles

Piles or haemorrhoids are swollen and enlarged blood vessels located in the anal region. An internal haemorrhoid is located inside the anus, and external haemorrhoids are located under the skin around the anus. Haemorrhoids can prolapse, which means they bulge outside of the anus. Internal haemorrhoids can be further classified into different grades or degrees:

  1. Internal haemorrhoid is present inside the anus
  2. External haemorrhoid is present under the skin around the anus.

Internal Haemorrhoids are further classified into

  1. Grade I or First-Degree Piles: Haemorrhoids that are not visible from the outside.
  2. Grade II or Second-Degree Piles: Haemorrhoids that come out of the anus due to exertion or while passing stools but go back inside by themselves.
  3. Grade III or Third-Degree Piles: Haemorrhoids that come out of the anus due to exertion or while passing stools but require to be pushed back manually.
  4. Grade IV or Fourth-Degree Piles: Haemorrhoids that stay outside of the anus and cannot be manually pushed back inside the anus.

Treatment according to the grading of piles:

  1. Grade I haemorrhoids are treatable by warm water baths or office procedures like rubber band ligation to halt the progression to advanced grades.
  2. Surgery is advisable for Grade II to IV haemorrhoids to remove the hemorrhoidal tissue or disrupt the blood vessels inside the pile.
  3. To learn more about the grading of piles, confirm your diagnosis, halt the progression of the disease and treat piles, contact our care specialist.

The causes of haemorrhoids include:

  1. Increase in pressure inside the abdomen due to pregnancy or obesity, leading to swelling of blood vessels in the anal region.
  2. Applying too much pressure while passing stools or while lifting heavy objects. Straining puts pressure on the blood vessels located in the anal region.
  3. If you have piles, you may experience the following symptoms:
  4. Pain and itching in the anal region
  5. Bleeding per rectum
  6. Lumps in the anal area.
  7. Mucous Discharge

Your proctologist will decide the treatment for piles based on the severity of your condition and prolapsed haemorrhoids. For example, they may opt for laser surgery for multiple small internal and large internal haemorrhoids. However, even though laser surgery provides accuracy and precision, it is not helpful for external haemorrhoids

A comparison of laser surgery with other surgical methods has been given in the table
