Types of Liver Transplant

A liver transplant, also known as a hepatic transplant, is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of a diseased liver to replace it with a healthy one. The part of the healthy liver is taken either from a deceased or a living donor. It is a lifesaving treatment for a person suffering from end-stage liver disease and acute liver failure.

The liver of the healthy living donor soon grows back to normal size. The part of the liver which is received grows to normal size in some time.

Process for Liver Transplant

1. Diagnosis & evaluation with Liver transplant surgeon
2. Ascertain Transplant as recommended treatment
3. Identification of liver donor within immediate family*
4. Donor & recipient matching through diagnostic tests
5. If matched, living donor transplant is opted post consent & approvals
6. If not matched, patient need to register for deceased donor transplant in government registry (NOTTO & state directories)
7. Living donor’s & recipient’s document verification is done by a government authorised committee
8. Patient & donor are admitted
9. Pre-transplant evaluation process is initiated
10. Surgery is performed
11. Post-op observation
12. Transfer to ICU
13. Stay at the hospital for 20-25 days (as per recovery)
14. Patient is discharged & requested to stay locally for regular follow-ups

1. Aadhar card & passport (mandatory)
2. Voter ID, Driving License, PAN card
3. Domicile Certificate / Citizenship card
4. Family photo (recent & old) – 5-10 different occasions with donor & recipient to be present in all
5. Passport size photo (20)
6. Wedding photo, wedding card, marriage certificate (if husband/wife is the donor)
7. Bank statement (3 Years)
8. Form 20
9. Birth certificate
10. School certificate
11. Police verification
12. Psychological evaluation
13. HLA DNA test (Form 5)
14. No objection certificate from an immediate family member of the donor (other than the recipient)
