Recovery Rate of Piles - How Long Do Piles Last?

Types of Haemorrhoids-

1. External Haemorrhoidal Veins are swollen under the skin around the anus. It can be itchy and painful.

2. Internal Haemorrhoids

Veins are swollen inside the rectum. These haemorrhoids may bleed, but they are not painful.

3. Prolapsed- These are present both internally and externally. These haemorrhoids can stretch and bulge outside the anus. They may bleed and be painful.

Treatment

Treatment -

  1. Drugs for piles include over-the-counter medications like topical pain relievers- acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and aspirin.
  2. The minimally invasive procedure includes - Rubber band ligation, which involves tying the bottom of haemorrhoids with a rubber band to halt the blood flow to haemorrhoids.
  3. Sclerotherapy involves injecting chemical solutions containing zinc, chloride, and quinine into the area around each haemorrhoid. 
  4. Electrotherapy is a procedure in which electric current is applied to destroy small piles which cannot be treated with banding.
  5. Coagulation techniques burst light which causes coagulation leading to shrinkage of haemorrhoids.
  6. Surgical procedures include the removal of excessive tissue that causes bleeding haemorrhoid stapling.
  7. High fibre diet and Sitz bath help in comforting the piles.

  1. Small haemorrhoids resolve without any treatment within a few days.
  2. Patients may feel better at the end of the first week after the surgery.

  2. 2. Commonly, patients can return to normal activities within 1-2 weeks.
  3. 3. At the time of recovery patient may experience minor bleeding, soreness, bruising, irritation, and discharge
  4. 4. At the time of recovery, patients need to follow self-care measures like staying well hydrated, adherence to over-the-counter medications, and application of ice packs.
  5. 5. Stitches at the site of the surgery may dissolve on their own in a week.

Recovery after Sclerotherapy for piles-

  1. Slight pain or pressure is noticed after 2-3 days of surgery.
  2. After 4-5 weeks of the procedure, shrinkage in piles can be seen.
  3. Avoid strenuous activities after the procedure.

Recovery after Hemorrhoid banding-

  1. Pain is likely for 24-48 hours after the surgery. Taking over the counter drugs can ease the pain.
  2. Bleeding is observed for 7-10 days after the surgery.
  3. Avoid straining while excreting faeces.

Management of Recovery-

  1. Minimise painful activities like lifting, squatting, and bending, especially in the first few days after surgery.
  2. Doctors may prescribe over-the-counter medications for the management of pain and stool softeners to make stools easier to pass.
  3. It is important to drink plenty of water while recovering
  4. High-fibre rich foods may help in long-term recovery.
  5. Exercise may help control constipation. 

Lifestyle changes may help in recovery from symptoms of haemorrhoids.

  1. Lifestyle changes include avoiding delays in bowel movements.
  2. Gently wash the anus after each bowel movement.
  3. Use an ice pack to reduce pain or discomfort.
  4. Spending so much time on the toilet may lead the blood to pool in veins in the rectum leading to unnecessary pressure on them.
  5. Sitting in a warm tub for a few minutes to bathe the anal area is beneficial.

Role of Diet in recovery-

  1. Consuming food rich in fibre plays a crucial role as it makes the stool softer and easy to pass.
  2. Fibre-rich foods include grains and fruits like apples, pear, raspberries, prunes, and pear.
  3. Vegetables like green peas, sweet potato, potato, and beans are also included.
  4. Diet after haemorrhoid surgery includes strained vegetable juice, milk products limited to two cups, pasta, white rice, and soft-cooked meat.
