Non Surgical Piles Treatment

Overview

Haemorrhoids also referred to as piles are bulging veins in the lower abdomen and anus. The walls of these blood vessels might perhaps stretch so thin that the veins protrude and thus become uncomfortable, specifically whenever you defecate.

In their basic state, the function of these cushions is to control the stool.

There are four types of haemorrhoids:

  1.  External haemorrhoids- These develop just below the skin of the anus.
  2. Internal haemorrhoids- These develop within the anus and lower rectum lining.
  3. Thrombosed haemorrhoids- It develops when blood accumulates and creates a clot in an external haemorrhoid (thrombus).
  4.  Prolapsed haemorrhoids- The haemorrhoids can prolapse both internally and externally, meaning they expand and bulge even outside the anus.

CAUSES

The major cause of haemorrhoids is straining, which lays pressure on the veins of the anus/rectum. Strain can occur by:

  1. Heavy lifting
  2. Pushing hard to defecate during constipation
  3. Pelvic pressure from weight gain

Risk Factors

  1. Factors that increase the risk of development of haemorrhoid in an individual are:
  2. Having a family history of haemorrhoids
  3. Obesity
  4. Age: Individuals older than 50 are at higher risk.
  5. Pregnancy
  6. Straining your abdomen by regular heavy lifting

Prevention and Disease reduction

Some preventive measures to avoid the development of haemorrhoids are:

  1. Have a fibrous diet
  2. Maintain a healthy weight
  3.  Exercise regularly
  4. Avoid straining your body
  5.  Drink enough fluids
  6. Avoid sitting for a long period

When to See a Doctor?

You should consult a doctor if you have:

  1. High bleeding
  2. Unable to pee/defecate
  3.  Constant high fever
  4.  Abdominal pain

Risk if not treated in Time

Although in most cases the haemorrhoids heal on their own. In situations where the haemorrhoids do not heal and are left untreated, the severity of the disease increases. It causes:

  1. Anaemia
  2.  Infection of external haemorrhoid
  3. Skin tags
  4.  Blood clots

Diagnosis

  1. Your doctor will initially analyze your symptoms, review your medical history and then can perform a physical examination.
  2. Other diagnostic tests performed by your doctor are:
  3. Digital rectal exam (DRE): To check for haemorrhoids, fissures, or other abnormalities, your physician will gently enter a gloved, lubricated finger into your anus.
  4. Sigmoidoscopy: Sigmoidoscopy is a noninvasive endoscopic evaluation of the large intestine from the rectum to the sigmoid colon, which is the closest region of the colon.
  5. Anoscopy: It is a procedure that enables the doctor to inspect the anus and rectum's inner lining.
  6. Colonoscopy: It is a procedure employed to identify abnormalities or variations in the large intestine or rectum.

Treatments

Haemorrhoids are usually self-healing; therefore, your specific line of treatment will be based upon your case. Some of the non-surgical options your doctor might advise you are:

Home remedies:

  1. Adding a fibrous diet into your lifestyle, and increasing your fluid intake relieve mild haemorrhoids in about 2-7 days.
  2. Warm sitz bath for 20 minutes several times a day
  3. Ice packs might ease the pain as well as the swelling
  4. Take oral painkillers
  5. Applying over-the-counter medications like lidocaine, and hydrocortisone might provide some relief.
  6. Taking laxatives for stool softening
  7. Performing some minimally invasive procedures:
  8. o Rubber-band litigation: To stop internal haemorrhoids from bleeding, your physician will wrap one or two thin rubber bands all over its base. Within a week, the haemorrhoid withers and falls off.
  9. Sclerotherapy: It is a painless procedure wherein your doctor will insert a chemical solution into the haemorrhoid tissue.
  10. Coagulation: In this technique, they harden and shrivel tiny, bleeding internal haemorrhoids. It might be carried out using either laser, heat or IR.

How to Prepare for doctor Consultation

You must prepare a list of questions to ask your doctor that must include:

  1. What is the cause of my symptom?
  2.  What will be my line of treatment?
  3. What is the recovery period?
  4.  What are the required lifestyle modifications?
  5. I have other medical issues. How can I manage these along with haemorrhoids?
  6. Your doctor will ask you about your lifestyle, medical history, symptoms, and family history with haemorrhoids.
